How many cups of tea a day you can drink without harming your health
Tea is drunk at any time of the day. Yet, many people replace regular water with it. But how many cups of tea a day is the limit? It all depends on the type of drink and how strong it is brewed.
A safe amount of tea per day
There have been no serious studies on this topic yet. However, scientists constantly emphasize the benefits of the drink. Since both black and green tea are made from leaves from the same bush, their properties are about the same. But there is still a difference:
- Black tea has anti-inflammatory properties, normalizes digestion, lowers blood pressure and regulates cholesterol levels;
- Green tea slows the aging process, strengthens the heart and blood vessels, protects against viruses, reduces anxiety and improves brain function.
A possible danger in drinking tea in large quantities is theine (as tea caffeine is called), but this claim is debatable. A safe daily allowance of caffeine is 400 mg. It's pretty hard to count the amount of theine contained in each particular cup, but let's give it a try. The calculations will depend on the tea variety, water temperature, brewing time length, the length of cut and other factors.
For example, a standard mug (200 ml) of strong black tea can contain up to 90 mg of caffeine - so you can drink up to five servings a day. Green tea has slightly less caffeine - up to 50 mg per the same cup, meaning the daily allowance is about eight servings.
Due to the presence of the unique amino acid L-theanine, which is considered a brain activator, the tea caffeine acts more gently than coffee caffeine. It's invigorating too, but the effect is smooth and lasts longer.
What is a “strong tea”
Different countries have developed their own tea-making traditions. For example, in the UK and in Russia it is customary to make tea for the whole family at once and brew for more than five minutes. That said, the British, who can drink tea up to five times a day, try to prepare a fresh serving of the beverage for each tea break.
That's what determines the tea's strength:
- the more leaves you put in the kettle, the stronger the drink will be;
- the long brewing process makes the tea not only concentrated but also bitter.
If you combine both, you're guaranteed to get a very strong infusion.
The reference proportions for making tea in the classic way are as follows: a teaspoon of brew for every 200 ml of water, plus one more for the kettle itself. Black tea is poured with boiling water, green tea - with 80 ° C water. Brewing time is three minutes.
Is it okay to drink strong tea all the time?
Yes, it is if that is the way you like it. However, not everyone likes the concentrated bitter beverage. Tannins make it that way - useful substances that have a positive effect on digestion, but in large quantities distort the tea's flavor.
